Törggelen at Paradies

When autumn arrives in the Val Venosta and the days grow shorter, a special time begins: the Törggelen season. Törggelen is a beloved autumn tradition that locals and guests look forward to year after year. At Hotel Paradies, we also keep this tradition alive and invite our guests to enjoy a cosy Törggelen afternoon in the garden.

From the end of September, as soon as the first chestnuts are ripe, we invite our guests once a week to enjoy a cosy Törggelen afternoon.

The name “Törggelen” comes from the Latin word torquere, meaning “to press”, and refers to the traditional wine press. In the past, people would gather after the harvest to taste the new wine and enjoy the region’s typical specialities together. Over the years, this old farming tradition has evolved into a wonderful tradition centred around good food, conviviality and enjoying the beauty of autumn.

South Tyrolean Specialities and a Glass of Suser

Of course, traditional Törggelen also includes Suser, the young wine that is still fermenting. It is traditionally enjoyed with the meal and pairs particularly well with typical South Tyrolean dishes. Our younger guests can also enjoy fresh apple or grape juice. And when the temperatures outside begin to drop, hot drinks provide a little extra warmth.

Food is also an essential part of a Törggelen afternoon: South Tyrolean specialities and, of course, our popular Krapfen are simply a must. Our apple fritters are especially popular. They are freshly prepared outdoors in our antique wood-fired oven – warm and ready to be enjoyed straight away.

Autumn Cosiness at Paradies

For us, Törggelen means more than just good food and a glass of wine. It is about sitting together, enjoying the moment, sharing stories and spending a wonderful autumn evening in good company. We cherish this special tradition with great passion, and every year it is organised by our junior manager Andreas together with his father, Kurt.

After a day spent in the South Tyrolean mountains, there is something particularly special about gathering together in a cosy atmosphere and enjoying the region’s traditional specialities. Chestnuts are an important part of Törggelen: first, the “Keschtn” (chestnuts in the South Tyrolean dialect) are carefully scored before being slowly roasted over an open fire. Once the shells have opened beautifully and the chestnuts develop their distinctive, wonderfully autumnal aroma, they are placed in the “Keschtn Riggl”. By shaking it vigorously, the roasted chestnuts are freed from their shells – a traditional ritual that is not only an essential part of Törggelen, but also creates a particularly convivial atmosphere.

Autumn Hike: The Chestnut Waal in Silandro

For those who would like to enjoy autumn in Val Venosta beyond Törggelen, we recommend a hike along the Chestnut Waal in Silandro. The trail is particularly beautiful in autumn, when nature gradually transforms into its colourful seasonal shades and the chestnuts begin to ripen.

The route leads from Silandro along the Chestnut Waal towards Corces and can easily be enjoyed as a circular hike. The walk is a wonderful way to combine an autumn day in nature with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

Törggelen Season in Kastelbell

Autumn is also a time for Törggelen in Kastelbell-Tschars. From 28 September to 15 November 2026, a variety of events and activities celebrating autumn and the Törggelen tradition will take place. These include wine tastings, autumn hikes, guided apple tours, live music and, of course, cosy Törggelen celebrations.

We are happy to register our guests for the various activities and offer recommendations on what is particularly worth experiencing. This way, you can enjoy the Törggelen season beyond our hotel and discover autumn in Val Venosta in many different ways.

Whether on an autumn hike, roasting chestnuts or enjoying a cosy Törggelen evening – autumn in Val Venosta has so many wonderful sides, and we look forward to experiencing this special season together with our guests.
