The Martell Valley: Between strawberry fields, mountains, and blue water

Anyone who comes to the Martell Valley discovers not only an impressive mountain landscape, but a valley shaped by nature, tradition, and hospitality. The Martell Valley is particularly well known as the "Strawberry Valley" because the alpine climate allows the strawberries to ripen slowly, developing their unique sweetness and full aroma. Along with the famous Strawberry Trail, the annual Strawberry Festival is a true highlight.

Even on the drive from Paradies into the Martell Valley, there is so much to discover. I am always fascinated by the view of the surrounding mountains, the wide meadows, and the scattered farmsteads. For hiking enthusiasts especially, the valley is a true paradise.

A particularly beautiful and well-known tour leads along the Plima Gorge Trail to the Zufallhütte mountain hut. The trail runs past impressive viewpoints high above the Plima Gorge and ends by crossing a large suspension bridge. The destination of the hike is the Zufallhütte, which is perfect for a break. There, you can recharge with food and drinks, while right in front of it is a lovely playground. The hike is also very manageable with children, for example using a child carrier backpack.

A sparkling highlight: Lake Zufritt

The idyllic Lake Zufritt is also always worth a stop. The reservoir in the rear Martell Valley instantly fascinates visitors with its deep blue water, which reflects the surrounding mountain peaks. A beautiful, flat walking trail leads all the way around the lake. It is ideally suited for families and can easily be completed with a stroller (halfway around, then returning along the same path) – perfect for a relaxing timeout in nature.

One of the first stops at the entrance of the valley is the "Trattla" leisure station. There, you will find not only the Culturamartell local history museum, which offers fascinating insights into the lives of mountain farmers from past centuries, but also an indoor climbing hall, a large playground, a tennis court, a minigolf course, and a fishing pond.

Another absolute must-see is the "Strawberry World" (Erdbeerwelt), where visitors can purchase fresh berries as well as regional products. The name is no coincidence: the Martell Valley is nicknamed the "Strawberry Valley" because, due to the high altitude and the alpine climate, the fruits grow particularly slowly, allowing them to develop their intense flavor.

One of the annual highlights in the Martell Valley is the Strawberry Festival, which takes place every year on the last weekend of June. Numerous visitors from near and far come to the valley to celebrate the strawberry in all its facets.

A special highlight of the festival is the election of the Strawberry Queen. In addition, numerous culinary specialties ensure the physical well-being of the guests. After lunch, coffee and a piece of the famous strawberry cake are, of course, a must. After all, the world's largest strawberry cake is cut at the Strawberry Festival – an impressive experience for both young and old.

Excellent entertainment is also provided: live music creates a cheerful atmosphere, and the large market offers regional products, handicrafts, and many other specialties. There is plenty on offer for children, too. A varied children's program with activities such as face painting ensures that even the youngest visitors have an unforgettable day.

Anyone who wants to take a closer look at the "Strawberry Valley" should then visit the Strawberry Trail. This worthwhile themed trail begins right by the Trattla leisure station. Along the trail, visitors can marvel at the strawberry fields and learn interesting facts about the cultivation of these popular fruits at various information stations. At the same time, the trail offers beautiful, recurring views of the surrounding mountains and the Martell Valley. This makes the Strawberry Trail a great excursion tip for both young and old.
