Packing Made Easy: Expert Tips from Herzstück Pediatric Practice

Your first family vacation is a truly special milestone. Suddenly, you're no longer traveling as a couple, but as a family—with new needs, plenty of questions, and lots of excitement. What should you pack? What should you keep in mind? And how do you find a hotel where everyone feels comfortable?

The good news is that with the right preparation and a family-friendly hotel, your first vacation together can become a wonderful and unforgettable experience—for both parents and children.

Well Prepared for Your First Family Vacation

When traveling with a baby or toddler for the first time, it's only natural to want to make sure you haven't forgotten anything. Along with clothing and your child's favorite cuddly toy, there are a few practical essentials that should also be in your luggage.

To help you travel with confidence, we've gathered valuable advice from experienced professionals. On the recommendation of Dr. Pflugbeil and Dr. Pflugbeil from Herzstück Pediatric Practice, we've put together a travel first-aid checklist featuring the essentials that no family trip should be without.

Be Prepared: What to Pack in Your Child's Travel First-Aid Kit

Even on vacation, minor injuries, a sudden fever, or stomach upsets can happen. A well-stocked travel first-aid kit tailored to your child's age provides peace of mind and helps parents assess and manage minor health concerns until medical advice is available if needed.

Dr. Claus Pflugbeil, MD, and Birgit Pflugbeil from Herzstück Pediatric Practice recommend including the following essentials:

  • Pain and fever medication suitable for your child's age and weight (containing paracetamol/acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
  • A digital thermometer
  • Saline solution (0.9% sodium chloride)
  • Age-appropriate decongestant nasal drops
  • Anti-gas medicine containing simethicone
  • Oral rehydration solution (electrolytes) to replace fluids and salts lost through diarrhea or vomiting
  • Healing ointment for minor wounds and a zinc-based barrier cream
  • Child-friendly antiseptic spray
  • Adhesive bandages in various sizes, sterile gauze pads, bandages, and basic dressing materials
  • An age-appropriate antihistamine (e.g. syrup, tablets, or gel)
  • Tweezers and a small pair of first-aid scissors
  • Child-appropriate sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Any prescribed medication for known allergies or chronic medical conditions, along with a personal emergency action plan if applicable
  • Your child's health insurance card, vaccination record, important medical documents, and emergency contact numbers

Before traveling, discuss with your pediatrician which medications are appropriate for your child and the correct dosage. For children, medication doses are often based on their current body weight. Keep all medicines safely out of children's reach, protect them from excessive heat, and, when flying, carry essential medications in your hand luggage whenever possible.

Pediatric Expertise on the Go

In addition to the classic medication and travel first-aid checklist, Dr. Claus Pflugbeil, MD, and Birgit Pflugbeil recommend that parents take some time before their vacation to learn how to handle common childhood illnesses and minor emergencies.

That is exactly why they developed the “Kinderarzt to go – Travel Card Set”. These compact cards accompany families on their journeys and provide easy-to-understand guidance on how parents can respond correctly to situations such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sunburn, insect bites, or minor injuries.

Additional videos provide further pediatric expertise and help parents assess when care at the destination is sufficient and when a child should be examined by a doctor.

Their Additional Tip:

Before setting off on your journey, make sure to check the vaccination status of all family members in good time, find out about the medical care available at your holiday destination, and save the most important emergency numbers on your mobile phone. Travel health insurance with repatriation coverage can be particularly useful when traveling abroad.

Well Taken Care Of – Also When It Comes to Dining

Especially during a vacation, food and catering play an important role—after all, every member of the family should feel completely comfortable. That is why we offer the right options for every age group.

For our youngest guests, we provide a baby food service with a selection of different baby purées. On request, our kitchen team is also happy to prepare fresh baby food every day using high-quality ingredients. Of course, we also take care of the professional sterilization of baby bottles.

Older children are well looked after too: They can enjoy dinner together with their new friends at the Kids Club from 6:00 pm. They can choose from a varied children's menu featuring popular favorite dishes. Families who prefer to dine together can, of course, also order children's meals during the shared family dinner from 7:00 pm.

This way, every member of the family—from babies to parents—will find exactly what they need.

Parents Deserve a Vacation Too

Family time is wonderful—but every now and then, it is also important to enjoy some time as a couple. Upon advance reservation, we are happy to arrange a caring babysitter (for an additional fee) who will lovingly look after your child.

This way, both mom and dad can take a moment to relax, recharge, and enjoy some well-deserved time for themselves.

Adventures for Little Explorers

While parents relax, children can look forward to a new adventure every day.

Our Kids Club offers a varied program seven days a week, with a total of 70 hours of childcare per week for children aged three and above.

Whether baking pizza, doing arts and crafts, enjoying face painting, exploring nature, or playing together—our activities create not only wonderful holiday memories but often also new friendships.

A special highlight: Children enjoy their meals together with their caregivers and new friends. Parents are, of course, welcome to join them at any time.

Fun in Any Weather

Even when the weather does not cooperate, boredom is guaranteed not to be an option.

Our lovingly designed playroom brings the beauty of nature right into the hotel. Natural wood, an indoor slide for our youngest guests, a reading corner, cozy hideaways, and plenty of play opportunities inspire children's imaginations and invite them to explore and have fun.

As soon as the sun comes out, our spacious outdoor garden awaits with:

  • Adventure playground
  • Playhouse
  • Sports area for football and active games
  • Plenty of space to play and discover

Your first family vacation does not have to be perfect, but with good preparation, it can be a more relaxed experience for every generation. This is how shared adventures, happy moments, and unforgettable memories as a family are created.
